An Eye Exam Schedule for Your Kids

According to the Canadian Association of Optometrists:

  • Infant Exam: 6 months old. We assess for high or unequal prescriptions, eye misalignment, or eye health issues that could interfere with visual development. Pupils are often dilated using a kid-friendly drop to give the optometrist the clearest view.
  • Preschool Exam: Around 3 years old. We check prescription, eye coordination, depth perception, colour vision, and eye health. Up to 1 in 10 preschoolers may have a vision problem that affects learning.
  • JK & Kindergarten Exam: Around 5 years old. With increased input from your child, we refine testing for distance vision, reading, eye coordination, and overall eye health.

Depending on your child’s unique visual needs, we may recommend a different exam schedule.

Myopia Management at Ilex Eyecare

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision condition that affects how clearly children see at a distance. If left untreated, myopia can impact school, sports, and daily activities and may increase the risk of eye health issues later in life.

At Ilex Eyecare, we offer comprehensive myopia management options tailored to your child’s needs, including:

  • Abiliti 1-Day contact lenses
  • Atropine eye drops
  • Combination treatments (Atropine plus another method)
  • MiSight 1-Day contact lenses
  • And more!

Signs of Vision Problems in Your Children

Children may not be able to explain when something is wrong with their vision. Watch for:

  • Squinting or rubbing eyes frequently
  • Sitting too close to screens or books
  • Avoiding close-up tasks
  • Losing their place while reading
  • Using a finger to guide reading
  • Head tilting or covering one eye
  • Complaints of double vision or frequent headaches
  • Misaligned eyes

If you notice any of these signs, book an appointment today. Early detection can prevent long-term vision problems.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Eye Exam

During your child’s eye exam, we’ll assess:

  • Visual acuity: Ability to see clearly at different distances
  • Eye focusing: Maintaining clear vision during quick changes
  • Eye tracking: Keeping eyes on target when moving between objects
  • Eye teaming: Using both eyes together for depth perception
  • Hand-eye coordination: Processing visual information to guide hands
  • Visual perception: Organizing images into letters, words, and ideas
