Protecting Your Vision in an Eye Emergency
Eye emergencies can happen at any time, and even minor injuries or sudden changes in vision can put your eyesight at risk. At Ilex Eyecare, we provide urgent care for eye injuries, infections, and other serious problems.
We offer weekend and holiday after-hours coverage for both existing and new patients. Please call 519.590.9529 and leave a message with the details of your emergency, including a number where you can be reached.
Your situation will be triaged, and we will return your call shortly with a proposed management plan. Please note that an after-hours consultation fee may apply in addition to any OHIP or non-insured examination charges.
If your emergency occurs during regular office hours, contact Ilex Eyecare for a same-day appointment. If the office is closed and it is urgent, proceed to the nearest emergency room.

When to Seek Urgent Care
Seek immediate attention if you notice any of the following:
- Severe eye pain
- Swelling around the eye
- Sudden loss of vision
- Sudden flashes of light or a shower of floaters
- A foreign object in the eye
- Scratches or abrasions to the cornea
- Significant discharge or redness
Quick evaluation and treatment are essential to preserve vision and prevent complications.

First Aid for Common Eye Emergencies
An eye emergency can happen with little to no warning and appear with different symptoms. It’s important to us to help educate our patients on what they can do before receiving treatment for their eye emergencies.
If you or someone you know is experiencing one of the following eye emergencies, please use these first-aid strategies and seek medical attention.
Chemical eye injuries can occur at home, at work, or while gardening. If a chemical gets into your eye:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Turn your head so the affected eye is down and to the side.
- Hold the eyelid open and flush the eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes.
- Contact Ilex Eyecare immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.
Small objects like dust or sand can cause irritation:
- Avoid rubbing the eye.
- Blink repeatedly to try to remove the object.
- Rinse the eye with artificial tears or cool water.
- Seek care if the object cannot be removed or irritation persists.
Large objects such as glass or metal can severely damage the eye. Do not attempt to remove them yourself. Seek emergency care immediately.
A corneal abrasion is a scratch on the delicate surface of the eye. Avoid rubbing the eye, as this can worsen the injury. Contact Ilex Eyecare or go to the nearest emergency room for treatment.
Injuries to the eyeball or eyelids require urgent attention. Protect the area with a loose bandage if needed, but do not apply pressure. Seek immediate care to prevent further damage.
- Vision loss: Sudden loss of vision could indicate a serious eye condition. Immediate evaluation is critical.
- Flashes or floaters: These can be caused by retinal issues or eye trauma. Seek urgent care if they appear suddenly or in combination with other symptoms.
- Blurry or warped vision: Could signal an eye disease or emergency condition such as retinal detachment or vascular events.
Eye redness with discharge may indicate an infection, such as conjunctivitis, that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. Ilex Eyecare can provide appropriate medication or therapy to resolve the issue safely.
